Anti Sperm Antibody

Anti-sperm antibodies are immune proteins that mistakenly bind to sperm, reducing motility, blocking sperm–egg interaction, or causing sperm clumping. They can develop in men after injury, infection, or vasectomy, or in women after exposure to sperm. Diagnosis uses lab tests on semen or cervical mucus. Treatment may include intrauterine insemination, assisted reproductive techniques, or immunosuppressive approaches depending on severity.

If anti-sperm antibodies are reducing fertility, options include sperm washing with intrauterine insemination (IUI) or IVF with ICSI to bypass antibodies. Anti-sperm antibodies often cause no obvious symptoms; they’re suspected with unexplained infertility, repeated failed assisted-conception, abnormal semen analysis showing sperm agglutination or reduced motility, or recurrent pregnancy loss. Diagnosis requires laboratory testing—mixed antiglobulin reaction (MAR) or immunobead tests on semen and sometimes blood. Check sperm quality with a formal semen analysis at a clinic: measures volume, concentration/total count, motility (progressive), morphology and pH.
