Anti Smooth Muscle Antibody (ASMA), in Pimpri Chinchwad

A positive ASMA (anti‑smooth muscle antibody) test means the immune system is making antibodies against smooth muscle, commonly linked with autoimmune hepatitis. It isn’t diagnostic alone—results need correlation with symptoms, liver blood tests, other autoantibodies, and sometimes liver biopsy. ASMA can also appear with other liver conditions or infections. Follow-up with your doctor or a liver specialist is recommended.

Positive anti–smooth muscle antibodies (ASMA) usually indicate autoimmune activity, most commonly autoimmune hepatitis type 1. They can also appear with chronic liver diseases (viral hepatitis, cirrhosis), drug‑induced liver injury, overlap autoimmune liver disorders, and other autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis). Low‑titer ASMA may be nonspecific and found in healthy people or after infections; clinical context and further testing determine significance.

Normal ASMA (anti–smooth muscle antibody) is usually negative or below laboratory cutoffs—commonly <1:40 (some labs use <1:20) or under ~20 U/mL. Low or borderline titres can occur in healthy people; clearly elevated titres suggest autoimmune liver disease and require clinical correlation. Always compare results to the lab’s reference range and discuss abnormal findings with your clinician.

The ASMA (anti–smooth muscle antibody) blood test typically costs roughly: India ₹400–1,500 (~$5–20) at private labs; UK private clinics £30–£100 (~$40–130); US private labs $30–$200. Costs vary with location, whether done through public health/insurance, lab paneling, and additional processing fees. Contact your local laboratory or insurer for an exact price and coverage details.

Yes. Autoimmune hepatitis can be serious: untreated inflammation may progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure, and life‑threatening complications. With prompt diagnosis and immunosuppressive treatment most people respond well and long‑term damage can often be limited, though some require ongoing therapy or liver transplantation. Diagnosis involves blood tests and sometimes liver biopsy; early treatment and regular follow‑up improve outcomes.

Anti–smooth muscle antibodies (ASMAs) are most strongly linked to autoimmune hepatitis type 1. They can also be seen in chronic viral hepatitis (including hepatitis C), drug‑induced liver injury, alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis, and other autoimmune disorders (eg, thyroid disease, systemic lupus). Low‑titre ASMAs may occur in older healthy people, so results require clinical correlation.
