Anti Cysticercosis IgG Antibody

Positive IgG for cysticercosis means the immune system has produced specific IgG antibodies against Taenia solium larvae, indicating current or past exposure to the parasite. It supports—but does not prove—active neurocysticercosis; results must be interpreted alongside clinical symptoms and imaging (CT/MRI). False positives or negatives can occur, so further tests and specialist assessment may be needed to confirm and guide treatment.

A positive Strongyloides IgG indicates past or current infection with the parasite—serology is sensitive for exposure but cannot always distinguish active from cleared infection. It warrants further evaluation (stool microscopy/PCR, eosinophil count) and consideration of treatment, especially before immunosuppression, because untreated infection can persist or cause severe hyperinfection. Discuss results with a clinician for appropriate testing and management.

A cysticercus antibody is an immune protein produced when the body reacts to the cysticercus, the larval stage of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium). Detection in blood or cerebrospinal fluid supports diagnosis of cysticercosis, helps monitor treatment, and indicates exposure; however, results must be interpreted with clinical findings and imaging because antibodies can persist after treated infection or cross-react with other parasites.

The blood test for cysticercosis is serology: antibody detection by ELISA or, more accurately, EITB (immunoblot). Antigen-detection assays (Ag‑ELISA) can indicate active infection. For neurocysticercosis, antibody testing in serum and cerebrospinal fluid supports the diagnosis but imaging (CT/MRI) is essential for confirmation and staging. Serology is adjunctive, not definitive alone.

A positive IgG indicates past exposure to a specific pathogen or response to vaccination, often reflecting immune memory or some degree of protection. It usually does not indicate active infection (IgM or PCR do), though timing and test type matter. IgG can persist months to years. False positives or cross-reactions can occur, so results should be interpreted with clinical history and possibly further testing.

Cysticercosis can be serious, especially when larvae infect the brain (neurocysticercosis). It commonly causes seizures, headaches, hydrocephalus, focal neurological deficits, cognitive problems and can be life‑threatening without treatment. Subcutaneous or muscle cysts are less dangerous but may cause symptoms. Effective diagnosis and treatment (antiparasitics, steroids, surgery or symptom control) improve outcomes, so prompt medical care is essential.
