What is a Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) Test in Chennai ?
What is Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)?
The Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) measures how much amniotic fluid surrounds the baby in the womb. Amniotic fluid cushions the baby and helps lungs and muscle development. Its level gives information about fetal health and how well the placenta is working. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests worldwide and plays a key role in both preventive screening and the investigation of liver disease.
What does Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) measure?
Low or high fluid levels can point to problems like growth restriction, birth defects, placental issues, ruptured membranes, or maternal conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Doctors use AFI during routine prenatal ultrasound and when there are concerns like reduced fetal movement or abnormal growth scans. Results help decide monitoring, further tests, treatments, or timing of delivery. Results are reported in International Units per litre (U/L). Mild elevations (2–3× normal) typically indicate reversible changes. Values above 10× normal suggest acute injury requiring urgent investigation.
What symptoms suggest Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) may be needed?
A doctor may order Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) when a patient reports fatigue or persistent low energy, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark amber or tea-coloured urine, pale or clay-coloured stools, upper right abdominal discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. In Chennai, residents of Saidapet and Virugambakkam commonly present for this test after noticing these symptoms during a routine or preventive consultation.
How is Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) performed?
A certified phlebotomist cleans the inner elbow, locates a vein, inserts a fine sterile needle, and draws the required blood (typically 5 to 10 mL). The procedure takes 3 to 5 minutes. You feel a brief pinch at insertion and mild pressure during collection. You can eat, drink, drive, and resume all activities immediately afterwards.
How accurate is Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)?
Rare causes of inaccurate results include: very high biotin supplementation (interferes with immunoassays), haemolysed samples from difficult venipuncture, or failure to fast when fasting was required. Following preparation instructions and using a trained phlebotomist minimises these risks.
Are there any risks to Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)?
There are no significant medical risks beyond those of a standard blood draw. Vasovagal fainting (rare) is more likely if you are fasting, anxious, or dehydrated. Drink 2 to 3 glasses of water before the appointment, remain seated during the draw, and stay seated for 2 to 3 minutes afterwards. Inform the phlebotomist if you have fainted during previous draws.
Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) Test Preparation in Chennai
Fasting and dietary instructions:
No special fasting needed. Avoid heavy fatty meals and alcohol the evening before as a general precaution.
Medication guidance:
Continue all regularly prescribed medication unless your doctor has specifically instructed otherwise. Inform lab staff about all prescription drugs, supplements, herbal preparations, and protein powders you are taking.
What to bring:
Carry your doctor's test order, a government-issued photo ID, and your OPD insurance card. If you have had this test before, bring previous reports , your doctor can compare results over time.
Timing:
Book the earliest available morning slot. For fasting tests, an overnight fast followed by a morning draw represents the optimal balance between adequate fasting duration and test accuracy.

Why Take a Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) Test in Chennai ?
When does a doctor order Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI)?
Your doctor orders Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) in three clinical scenarios: symptom-driven investigation (jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain), medication safety monitoring (baseline and periodic checks for drugs metabolised by the liver), and preventive screening in high-risk individuals including those with diabetes, obesity, or viral hepatitis.
Who should get Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) done in Chennai?
Hepatitis B prevalence in Tamil Nadu is estimated at around 3 to 4%. NAFLD is also rising rapidly among Chennai's large young professional population due to sedentary IT-sector jobs, high-carbohydrate diets, and rising obesity rates in areas like OMR and T Nagar. Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) is commonly included in fetal well-being or antenatal ultrasound assessments. Doctors order it when there are concerns such as decreased fetal movements, abnormal growth, leaking fluid, or maternal high blood pressure. Regular liver testing benefits: regular alcohol drinkers, individuals with BMI above 28, anyone on long-term medication including statins or anti-TB drugs, people with a personal or family history of hepatitis B or C, those with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and all adults above 40 in annual preventive panels. In Chennai, residents of Kodambakkam, Mogappair, and similar areas with sedentary lifestyles and calorie-dense diets face particularly elevated metabolic liver risk.
What conditions can Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) help diagnose?
Very high ALT and AST (10–50× normal) with normal ALP suggests acute hepatocellular injury , viral hepatitis, drug toxicity, or ischaemia. Predominantly elevated ALP and GGT with modest transaminases suggests bile duct obstruction or primary biliary cholangitis. An AST:ALT ratio above 2 suggests alcoholic hepatitis. Persistently low albumin with elevated bilirubin indicates advanced cirrhosis.
What do Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) results mean?
Mildly elevated ALT or AST (2–3× normal): fatty liver, obesity, or medication effect , often reversible. Moderately elevated (3–10×): active viral hepatitis or drug toxicity , requires urgent investigation. Severely elevated (>10×): acute liver injury , a medical emergency. High bilirubin: liver processing failure, bile duct obstruction, or haemolysis. Low albumin: significant loss of liver synthetic function, seen in advanced cirrhosis or malnutrition.
How often should Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) be repeated?
Adults with no liver risk factors and a previously normal result: annually. Patients with NAFLD or treated hepatitis: every 6 months. Patients on hepatotoxic medication: baseline before starting, then at 1 month, 3 months, and every 6 months during treatment. Patients with active liver disease: at intervals specified by their gastroenterologist.
What happens after Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) results are ready?
Your GetVisit digital report is delivered to your phone as soon as results are authorised. Share it directly with your doctor via the app, or book a consultation with a GetVisit-verified specialist on the same platform. Critical values outside a safe range are flagged by the laboratory for urgent clinical review.
