Alpha-2 (α2) adrenergic receptors are Gi‑coupled receptors that inhibit norepinephrine release, reducing sympathetic outflow. Activation lowers heart rate and blood pressure, produces sedation and analgesia, and can decrease insulin secretion. Centrally it promotes calmness and vasodilation; peripherally it may cause transient vasoconstriction. These effects explain use of drugs like clonidine and dexmedetomidine.
