Alpha Feto Protein (AFP)

An elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) can mean different things: in pregnancy it may indicate neural tube or abdominal wall defects, multiple pregnancy, incorrect dating, or placental issues and usually prompts repeat tests, targeted ultrasound, or diagnostic amniocentesis. In nonpregnant adults, high AFP suggests liver disease or tumors (hepatocellular carcinoma, germ cell tumors) and leads to imaging and tumor-marker evaluation.

Alpha‑fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein measured in blood. Normal alpha‑fetoprotein (AFP) levels vary by age and pregnancy. In nonpregnant adults, AFP is typically under about 7–10 ng/mL. In pregnancy, maternal serum AFP is reported as multiples of the median (MoM); values roughly 0.5–2.5 MoM are generally considered normal for gestational age.
