Urine typically shows ethanol for about 12–48 hours after drinking. Alcohol metabolites—ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS)—extend urine detection to roughly 3–5 days (commonly up to 72–80 hours), and sometimes longer following very heavy or prolonged drinking. Exact detection windows depend on amount consumed, drinking pattern, individual metabolism, hydration, body size, and the specific test cutoff used.

After drinking alcohol urine often becomes darker yellow or amber because alcohol is a diuretic and promotes fluid loss, concentrating urine. If you drink water along with alcohol, urine may remain pale or clear. Very dark amber, brown, or orange urine after heavy drinking could signal significant dehydration or possible liver injury and should prompt medical evaluation.

Alcohol is removed from urine mainly by liver metabolism; ethanol may be detectable in urine for about 12 to 48 hours, while ethyl glucuronide (EtG) can persist three to five days after drinking. Unhealthy urine colors include very dark amber or brown (dehydration, liver issues, some drugs), red or pink (blood, foods), orange (dehydration, medications), green or blue (infections, dyes, medications), and cloudy or milky urine (infection, pus, or high protein). Persistent abnormal color, strong odor, pain, burning, or other symptoms warrant medical evaluation.
