It is highly sensitive and specific, can confirm infection and, in some assays, determine serotype. However it can be serious in infants, older adults, and people with weakened immunity, sometimes causing pneumonia, hepatitis, or encephalitis and requiring hospitalization. Outbreaks occur in close settings. Most healthy individuals recover with supportive care; severe cases need medical treatment and, in specific populations, vaccination is available.

PCR test positivity varies by virus and person. For many respiratory viruses, including SARS‑CoV‑2, PCR is often positive for about 1–3 weeks after symptoms begin; viral RNA can persist and be detectable for several weeks to months in some cases. A positive PCR does not always mean infectious virus—high cycle thresholds or culture‑negative results suggest nonviable fragments. Immunocompromised people can remain PCR‑positive longer.
