The BACTEC test is an automated liquid‑culture system that detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis growth from clinical specimens. It monitors metabolic activity (radiometric or fluorescence oxygen‑quenching methods) to signal live bacilli, often yielding results faster and with higher sensitivity than solid media. Positive cultures allow species identification and drug‑susceptibility testing; detection time varies from several days to a few weeks depending on bacterial load.

BACTEC and MGIT are not the same, though both are automated liquid culture systems for mycobacteria. BACTEC originally referred to a radiometric detection platform, whereas MGIT (Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube) uses a fluorescent oxygen‑quenching sensor. Modern instruments (e.g., the MGIT 960) use MGIT technology; some vendors blur the names, but the detection methods differ. Both are faster than solid media and used in TB diagnostics.

The BACTEC MGIT 960 detects mycobacterial growth in liquid Middlebrook broth using an oxygen-sensitive fluorescent sensor at the tube bottom. As organisms respire, dissolved oxygen is consumed, reducing quenching and increasing fluorescence. The instrument continuously measures this fluorescence change, automatically signaling positive growth earlier than solid media and enabling rapid, automated detection and monitoring of mycobacteria.

A drug susceptibility test for TB determines which anti‑tuberculosis medications a patient’s Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain is sensitive or resistant to. It can be culture‑based (phenotypic) or molecular (genotypic) to detect genetic resistance markers. Results guide selection of effective drugs, enable tailored treatment for drug‑resistant TB (including MDR/XDR), and help prevent treatment failure and further transmission.

BACTEC is not a formal acronym but a proprietary trade name for an automated culture system made by Becton Dickinson. BACTEC systems detect microbial growth in blood and mycobacterial cultures using radiometric or fluorescent sensors and automated monitoring. In clinical use, "BACTEC" typically refers to these automated blood-culture and mycobacterial culture instruments rather than a spelled-out full form.
