5-a-Dihydrotestosterone (5a DHT), in Navi Mumbai

5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a potent androgen produced when the enzyme 5α-reductase converts testosterone. It binds androgen receptors more strongly than testosterone and drives male fetal sexual development, prostate growth, and secondary sexual characteristics. Excess DHT contributes to androgenic alopecia and benign prostatic hyperplasia; reducing DHT with 5α-reductase inhibitors is a common treatment strategy.

High dihydrotestosterone (DHT) often causes androgen-driven changes: it miniaturizes scalp hair follicles leading to male-pattern baldness, promotes prostate tissue growth causing urinary symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and can increase acne, oily skin and body/facial hair. In women it may cause hirsutism and menstrual disruption. Management typically targets DHT reduction with 5‑alpha‑reductase inhibitors under medical supervision.

Yes — people with 5‑alpha‑reductase deficiency (46,XY) typically have testes and can produce sperm because testosterone-driven intratesticular androgen supports spermatogenesis. Fertility varies: many can father children, but fertility may be reduced by factors like undescended testes, genital anatomy, or prior surgeries. Evaluation by an endocrinologist and fertility specialist can assess sperm count and discuss assisted reproductive options if needed.

Normal blood dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels vary by sex and laboratory. Typical adult male range is about 30–85 ng/dL (1.0–2.9 nmol/L); typical adult female range is roughly 4–22 ng/dL (0.14–0.76 nmol/L). Reference ranges differ by lab and assay, and clinical interpretation depends on age, symptoms, and other hormone levels. Discuss abnormal results with a clinician for individualized advice.

Yes. 5α‑reductase deficiency (5‑ARD) is a genetic condition that impairs conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), leading to undervirilized external genitalia in 46,XY people at birth and variable virilization at puberty. It is classified among differences of sex development (intersex variations). Management is individualized—medical, surgical and psychosocial care are guided by the person’s anatomy, health and gender identity.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is not simply good or bad. It’s a potent androgen essential for male fetal genital development, puberty changes, libido and some muscle and body hair growth. However, high levels or heightened sensitivity can drive male pattern baldness, prostate enlargement and related symptoms. Clinical management aims to balance normal physiological roles against treating excess DHT when it causes disease.
