3D Ultrasound Pelvis

A 3D pelvic scan is a non‑invasive imaging test that uses ultrasound or other imaging techniques to build three‑dimensional views of the pelvis. It shows detailed anatomy of the uterus, ovaries, bladder, pelvic floor and nearby structures, aiding detection of fibroids, cysts, congenital anomalies, and fetal assessment or surgical planning. It can be done transabdominally or transvaginally.

A pelvic ultrasound is used to evaluate the uterus, ovaries and nearby structures when a woman has pelvic pain, abnormal or heavy vaginal bleeding, suspected pregnancy problems (ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, fetal viability), infertility or irregular periods. It detects cysts, fibroids, polyps, masses and endometrial changes, monitors follicle growth for fertility treatment, checks IUD position and assesses suspected infection or postmenopausal bleeding.

A 3D ultrasound is typically performed in the late second to early third trimester, usually between 26 and 32 weeks of pregnancy (optimal around 26–30 weeks). At this stage the baby’s facial features are clearer and there’s usually enough amniotic fluid for good images. Scans before 24 weeks may show less detail; after 32 weeks images can be limited by low fluid or fetal position.

Yes — 3D ultrasounds use the same diagnostic sound waves as standard 2D scans and are generally considered safe when done by trained healthcare professionals for medical reasons. There’s no evidence of harm with appropriate use, but unnecessary, prolonged, or commercial “keepsake” sessions are discouraged. Follow your provider’s guidance on timing and frequency to minimize exposure and ensure scans are medically indicated.

Usually you only need a full bladder for early-pregnancy pelvic/3D scans to lift the uterus and improve images. If your appointment is in the first trimester, clinics commonly ask you to drink about 500–1,000 ml of water about an hour before and avoid urinating. For later-term 3D/4D scans a full bladder is typically unnecessary. Follow your clinic’s instructions.

Most pelvic scans are not painful. A transabdominal ultrasound may cause pressure or discomfort from a full bladder. A transvaginal ultrasound can cause mild discomfort or pressure but is usually well tolerated. CT and MRI are painless though contrast injections may sting briefly and MRI can feel cramped.
