3D Ultrasound Follicular Study Single Visit

A single follicular scan is one transvaginal ultrasound performed to assess ovarian follicles and endometrial thickness during a menstrual or treatment cycle. It measures follicle number and size to estimate imminent ovulation and help time intercourse, insemination, or medication adjustments. The scan is quick, minimally uncomfortable, and provides a snapshot; sometimes multiple scans are needed for definitive ovulation timing.

A follicular study typically requires about 2–4 ultrasound sittings per cycle. A baseline scan is done early (day 2–3), then repeat scans every 48 hours starting around day 8–10 to monitor follicle growth and timing of ovulation. The exact number varies with individual response and treatment plan, so your clinician may adjust frequency based on findings.

Costs vary by country, clinic and number of scans (usually 2–4). In India private clinics typically charge ≈₹800–3,000 per scan (total ≈₹2,400–9,000). In the US a transvaginal ultrasound is about $200–800 per scan (total $600–2,400). In the UK the NHS usually covers it; private rates run about £80–250 per scan. Ask your clinic for exact pricing.

Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) is the preferred scan for follicular study. It provides high-resolution, real-time measurement of follicle number and diameter, endometrial thickness, and ovulation timing. Serial TVUS examinations—often every 1–3 days as ovulation approaches—are standard. Transabdominal ultrasound is less sensitive and used when TVUS isn’t feasible; Doppler may be added to assess ovarian blood flow.

A follicular study cannot confirm pregnancy. It tracks ovarian follicles to time ovulation and assess ovarian response. Pregnancy is confirmed by a positive serum or urine hCG test and visualization of an intrauterine gestational sac on transvaginal ultrasound, usually around 5 weeks’ gestation. A follicular study may show a corpus luteum after ovulation but does not reliably diagnose pregnancy.

At 35, a normal antral follicle count (AFC) — measured by early‑cycle ultrasound — is generally about 8–20 follicles total across both ovaries (many clinics regard 10–15 as typical). Counts below about 7–8 suggest diminished ovarian reserve; counts above ~20 can indicate PCOS. AFC varies between individuals and should be interpreted with AMH, FSH and clinical context by a fertility specialist.
