A CT scan of the right wrist is a rapid imaging test that uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional and 3D images of bones, joints, and nearby soft tissues. It's used to detect complex fractures, ligament injuries, bone tumors, infection, or to guide treatment planning. The scan is noninvasive, typically takes minutes, and may use contrast dye for extra soft-tissue or vascular detail.

A 3D CT scan produces detailed cross‑sectional and reconstructed three‑dimensional images of bones, organs, blood vessels, and soft tissue. It’s used to diagnose fractures, tumors, infections, vascular disease, and internal bleeding; to plan and guide surgeries (orthopedic, dental, neurosurgical, cardiac) and interventions or biopsies; and to monitor disease progression or treatment response, improving visualization over 2D imaging.

Most 3D CT scans take only a few seconds to a few minutes to image, but the whole appointment—including positioning, contrast injection (if used), waiting and observation, and 3D reconstruction—typically lasts about 15–60 minutes. Without contrast expect nearer 15–30 minutes; with contrast or complex reconstructions allow up to an hour or slightly longer.

Side effects of a 3D CT scan include low-dose radiation exposure with a small long-term cancer risk, allergic reactions to iodine contrast (rash, itching, nausea, rarely severe anaphylaxis), and contrast-related kidney injury in people with impaired renal function. Other effects: temporary warmth or metallic taste during injection, injection-site bruising, and discomfort or claustrophobia. Risks are generally low; discuss pregnancy and kidney problems with your clinician.

A CT scan cannot detect the sensation of pain itself. It images bones, organs and tissues to reveal injuries, fractures, tumors, bleeding, infections or structural causes that may explain pain. Clinical history, physical exam and sometimes other studies (MRI, nerve tests or functional imaging) are needed to diagnose pain's source and severity. Imaging findings must be correlated with symptoms.

A wrist CT scan is very quick: the actual scan takes seconds to a few minutes. Allow about 10 to 20 minutes for positioning and preparation. If contrast isn’t needed, the whole appointment is usually under 30 minutes. The radiologist’s report may take from a few hours up to 48 hours depending on the service.
