What is a 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone Test in Howrah ?
What is 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone?
The 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone test measures a hormone precursor made mainly by the adrenal glands and ovaries. It plays a key role in making cortisol and sex hormones. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests worldwide and plays a key role in both preventive screening and the investigation of liver disease.
What does 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone measure?
Measuring it can reveal problems in steroid production. High levels often point to congenital adrenal hyperplasia or hormone-producing tumors. Doctors also use it when a child has early puberty or an adult has unexplained hair growth, irregular periods, or infertility. The test helps confirm a diagnosis and guides treatment decisions.
What symptoms suggest 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone may be needed?
17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone is generally requested as part of a liver function assessment. Doctors commonly investigate this area when someone reports fatigue or persistent low energy, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark amber or tea-coloured urine, pale or clay-coloured stools, upper right abdominal discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. Whether 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone specifically is the right test depends on your history and what your doctor is looking for. GetVisit makes testing convenient in Howrah, with partner-lab slots and home collection offered in many areas including Santragachi and Domjur.
How is 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone performed?
For 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone, a GetVisit phlebotomist in Santragachi or Domjur, Howrah applies a soft tourniquet, disinfects the site, and collects a small blood sample into a vacuum tube. The visit takes only a few minutes and you can return to your day straight away.
How accurate is 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone?
For 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone, alcohol within 24 hours and strenuous exercise can temporarily raise liver values, so avoid both before testing. The partner laboratory processes the sample under its own quality-control procedures; where it is NABL-accredited, that accreditation covers the laboratory and its defined scope.
Are there any risks to 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone?
Beyond a brief pinch, 17 - Alpha- Hydroxy Progesterone carries almost no risk. Keep the arm relaxed during the draw, press gently on the site afterwards, and avoid heavy lifting with that arm for about an hour.

Elevated 17‑hydroxyprogesterone suggests impaired cortisol synthesis, most commonly 21‑hydroxylase congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
