What is a 12 hours fasting cortisol Test in Raipur ?
What is 12 hours fasting cortisol?
This test measures the level of cortisol in your blood after a period without food or drink. Cortisol is a hormone made by the adrenal glands. It is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests worldwide and plays a key role in both preventive screening and the investigation of liver disease.
What does 12 hours fasting cortisol measure?
It helps control metabolism, blood pressure, immune response, and how the body handles stress. Measuring cortisol helps detect adrenal or pituitary gland problems. It is used to diagnose conditions like Cushing's syndrome (too much cortisol) or Addison's disease (too little cortisol). Doctors also use fasting cortisol to monitor treatment, check for abnormal daily patterns, and decide if further tests are needed.
What symptoms suggest 12 hours fasting cortisol may be needed?
12 hours fasting cortisol is generally requested as part of a liver function assessment. Doctors commonly investigate this area when someone reports fatigue or persistent low energy, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark amber or tea-coloured urine, pale or clay-coloured stools, upper right abdominal discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal swelling, and unexplained weight loss. Whether 12 hours fasting cortisol specifically is the right test depends on your history and what your doctor is looking for. GetVisit makes testing convenient in Raipur, with partner-lab slots and home collection offered in many areas including Ramnagar and Gudhiyari.
How is 12 hours fasting cortisol performed?
A quick venous blood sample is all that is needed. At your chosen slot in Ramnagar or Gudhiyari, Raipur, the phlebotomist collects the sample with sterile equipment; most people feel only a momentary prick and there is no downtime afterwards.
How accurate is 12 hours fasting cortisol?
Samples collected in Ramnagar or Gudhiyari, Raipur are transported under the conditions the test requires and processed by the partner laboratory under its own quality-control procedures. Where a NABL-accredited laboratory is used, that accreditation applies to the laboratory and its defined scope of tests.
Are there any risks to 12 hours fasting cortisol?
Risks are minimal. Some people notice a small bruise or brief soreness at the needle site, which settles within a day or two. Serious problems such as infection are very rare when sterile, single-use equipment is used, as it is at every GetVisit collection in Ramnagar and Gudhiyari, Raipur.
Did you know?
For a routine blood cortisol test you usually don’t need to fast, but samples are often taken early morning (about 8:00 AM).

Why Take a 12 hours fasting cortisol Test in Raipur ?
When does a doctor order 12 hours fasting cortisol?
12 hours fasting cortisol is commonly ordered as part of endocrine or adrenal function testing and sometimes during evaluation for Cushing’s or Addison’s syndromes. Doctors may request it when patients have unexplained fatigue, weight change, high blood pressure, mood changes, or muscle weakness.
Who should get 12 hours fasting cortisol done in Raipur?
NAFLD is rising among Raipur's administrative, trade and steel-sector workforce around Ramnagar and Urla, driven by sedentary routines, shift work and calorie-dense eating. Obesity and diabetes are the recognised drivers. NAFLD affects an estimated 25 to 35% of India's urban adults, the majority unaware. Regular liver testing in Raipur's residential areas including Ramnagar and Gudhiyari enables lifestyle intervention before irreversible scarring occurs. Patients recovering from hepatitis, those in alcohol recovery, and anyone with persistently unexplained fatigue also benefit from regular liver monitoring.
What conditions can 12 hours fasting cortisol help diagnose?
Very high ALT and AST (10-50× normal) with normal ALP suggests acute hepatocellular injury, viral hepatitis, drug toxicity, or ischaemia. Predominantly elevated ALP and GGT with modest transaminases suggests bile duct obstruction or primary biliary cholangitis. An AST:ALT ratio above 2 suggests alcoholic hepatitis. Persistently low albumin with elevated bilirubin indicates advanced cirrhosis. Abnormal results can come from adrenal or pituitary disease, long-term steroid use, severe illness, or stress. A family history of endocrine disorders may make this test more important.
What do 12 hours fasting cortisol results mean?
ALT above 56 U/L or AST above 40 U/L signals hepatocyte stress. The pattern matters: ALT greater than AST typically suggests NAFLD or viral hepatitis. An AST:ALT ratio above 2 points to alcoholic hepatitis. High ALP with normal transaminases suggests bile duct disease rather than liver cell damage. Low albumin alongside high bilirubin indicates serious loss of liver function.
How often should 12 hours fasting cortisol be repeated?
Adults with no liver risk factors and a previously normal result: annually. Patients with NAFLD or treated hepatitis: every 6 months. Patients on hepatotoxic medication: baseline before starting, then at 1 month, 3 months, and every 6 months during treatment. Patients with active liver disease: at intervals specified by their gastroenterologist.
What happens after your 12 hours fasting cortisol results are ready?
You will be notified as soon as the laboratory releases your results, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Open the report in the GetVisit app to see each value beside its reference range, share it with your doctor in a tap, or book a specialist consultation to talk it through.
