A pelvis X‑ray displays the bony pelvis (ilium, ischium, pubis), sacrum, coccyx and the proximal femora and hip joints. It detects fractures, dislocations, degenerative changes (osteoarthritis), bone lesions, infections and some calcifications or foreign bodies. It’s commonly used after trauma or for hip/pelvic pain. Soft tissues, subtle fractures and complex injuries often need CT or MRI for better detail.

A pelvic X‑ray primarily images bones—pelvis, hip joints and nearby fractures. It provides only limited soft‑tissue detail and generally does not show pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, ovaries, prostate) clearly. Organs may be visible only with abnormal calcifications or when contrast is used. For detailed assessment of pelvic organs, ultrasound, CT, or MRI are preferred.

A pelvic X-ray is generally safe: it uses low-dose ionizing radiation and, for most adults, the diagnostic benefits outweigh the very small long-term cancer risk. Special precautions are taken for pregnant women and children—pregnancy should be reported and alternatives (ultrasound/MRI) considered if possible. Technicians use shielding and minimize exposure; repeat exams are avoided unless clinically necessary.

Before a pelvis X‑ray, bring your referral and wear loose clothing or a hospital gown. Remove jewelry, belts, zippers and any metallic items from the waist down. Tell the radiographer if you are or might be pregnant, have implants, or recent contrast studies. You may be asked to empty your bladder and will need to lie still and follow breathing instructions during the exposure.

A pelvic X‑ray itself is painless — you won’t feel the X‑rays. Any discomfort usually comes from positioning, lying on a hard table, or moving injured tissues; staff will help minimize pain and support you. The scan is quick; you may need to remove clothing or metal. Tell staff if you are pregnant or in severe pain so they can adjust the procedure.

Pelvic X‑ray costs vary by country and facility. In the UK it's free via the NHS; in India private charges typically run about ₹200–₹1,500. In the US out‑of‑pocket prices commonly range from about $50–$400 (higher in hospitals or with additional views), though billed amounts can be much larger before insurance adjustments. Final cost depends on location, facility, number of views and insurance coverage.
