X RAY ABDOMEN, in Visit Clinic

An abdominal X-ray (plain AXR) shows bowel gas patterns and air-fluid levels to detect obstruction or ileus; free air under the diaphragm indicating perforation; calcifications such as kidney/urinary stones or vascular calcification; radiopaque foreign bodies; and some large masses or organ enlargement. It’s limited for soft-tissue detail—CT or ultrasound is recommended for stones, inflammation, or detailed organ assessment.

An abdominal X‑ray rarely detects cancer directly. It can show indirect signs: large soft‑tissue masses or organ displacement from big liver/renal tumours; bowel obstruction from colorectal cancer; and characteristic calcifications in mucinous tumours (appendiceal or ovarian) or teratomas. Because plain radiographs are insensitive, ultrasound or CT are usually required to confirm or better evaluate suspected abdominal malignancy.

Usually you do not need to fast before a routine abdominal X‑ray; eating and drinking are allowed. Exceptions include when additional imaging (contrast studies, CT, ultrasound) or planned surgery is expected — then fasting may be required. Always follow the radiology department’s instructions or your clinician’s advice; contact them beforehand if you are unsure or have diabetes, pregnancy, or other medical concerns.

A plain stomach X‑ray can suggest a blockage by showing a markedly dilated stomach or bowel loops and air‑fluid levels, but it’s not definitive. X‑rays have limited sensitivity and may miss partial or early obstructions. More accurate tests include contrast studies (barium), CT scan, or endoscopy to confirm the location and cause; clinical exam and labs guide further imaging.

Typically you won't need to fully undress; you may be asked to remove clothing, jewelry, metal objects or change into a hospital gown when they interfere with the image or the area being X-rayed. For chest, abdominal, or limb X-rays you may keep some clothes on if unobstructive. Tell staff if you’re pregnant; they will provide coverings and protect your modesty.

Abdominal X-ray images are available immediately after the scan, and a preliminary read can be given within minutes to a few hours for urgent cases. A formal radiologist report for routine outpatient exams is usually completed within 24–48 hours. Emergency or inpatient studies are expedited and may receive verbal or written results faster. Check with your clinic or hospital for specific turnaround times.
