Ultrasound Whole Abdomen, in Visit Clinic

A whole abdomen ultrasound visualizes abdominal organs—liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder and major vessels (including the aorta). It identifies organ size and structure, cysts, tumors, stones, inflammation, fluid collections and abscesses; Doppler assesses blood flow. It’s noninvasive and safe, though image quality may be limited by bowel gas, obesity or patient cooperation.

Whole‑abdomen ultrasound cannot reliably diagnose an uncomplicated UTI. Diagnosis requires urine testing (dipstick, urinalysis, culture) and clinical assessment. Ultrasound is useful when complications or anatomical problems are suspected—obstruction, stones, hydronephrosis, renal abscess, or other structural abnormalities—or for recurrent or complicated infections to guide management.

For a whole abdomen ultrasound adults should fast for 6–8 hours beforehand to reduce bowel gas and ensure optimal gallbladder visualization. Only small sips of water are usually allowed; avoid food, milk, alcohol, chewing gum and smoking. Continue essential medications with minimal water unless told otherwise, and tell the imaging team if you are diabetic or need special instructions.

Generally, for a whole‑abdomen ultrasound you should fast (no food or drinks, including water) for about 6–8 hours to reduce bowel gas and improve imaging. However, if pelvic or bladder views are required you’ll be asked to drink water and come with a full bladder (often ~500–1,000 ml an hour before). Follow your clinic’s exact instructions; take essential meds with small sips.

Abdominal ultrasound can detect many intra‑abdominal solid masses, especially liver lesions (primary hepatocellular carcinoma and metastases), renal (kidney) tumours, gallbladder and biliary tract masses, splenic lesions and some ovarian/pelvic masses. It can sometimes identify pancreatic tumours but is less sensitive there. Ultrasound often shows ascites or metastatic deposits, but CT/MRI are usually needed to confirm and stage suspected cancers.

Ultrasound is excellent for visualizing soft tissues, fluid collections, blood flow and fetal development, but it cannot detect every problem. It poorly images air-filled structures and bone, has limited depth and resolution for some small or early lesions, and is operator-dependent. For suspected fractures, lung pathology, or certain cancers, CT, MRI, X-ray or laboratory tests are often needed for definitive diagnosis.
