An ultrasound soft tissue scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, fat, skin and lumps. It’s non-invasive, painless and radiation-free, commonly used to assess swelling, pain, masses or infections and to guide injections or aspirations. A sonographer or clinician uses a handheld probe and gel; preparation is minimal and results are usually available immediately.

Doctors order soft-tissue ultrasound to evaluate lumps, bumps and swelling, distinguish cysts from solid masses, detect abscesses or infections, identify tendon, ligament or muscle tears, locate foreign bodies, and assess inflammation or vascularity with Doppler. It’s also used to guide needle procedures (aspiration or injection), monitor healing, and help distinguish benign from suspicious soft-tissue lesions without radiation.

Diagnostic ultrasound commonly images soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, glands, cysts, abscesses and hematomas, providing real-time, non-ionizing evaluation and guidance for injections or biopsies. Therapeutic ultrasound is also used in physiotherapy to promote soft-tissue healing and pain relief. It’s safe and portable but operator-dependent and limited by bone, air and very deep structures.

MRI is the preferred scan for evaluating soft tissues because it provides excellent contrast for muscles, tendons, ligaments, fat and nerves. Ultrasound is useful for superficial soft‑tissue structures and dynamic assessment such as tendon movement. CT shows soft tissue but with lower contrast than MRI; contrast‑enhanced or PET/CT studies are reserved for infection or malignancy.

A soft tissue ultrasound typically takes about 10–30 minutes. Simple focused scans for a single tendon, muscle, or lump often require 10–20 minutes; more detailed evaluations, multiple regions, Doppler assessment, or procedures such as aspiration can extend the appointment to around 30–45 minutes. Preparation and patient factors also influence total time.

Ultrasound can detect lumps and help characterize them (solid vs cystic) and show suspicious features—irregular shape, heterogeneous echoes or increased blood flow—but it cannot definitively diagnose cancer. Accuracy depends on organ, lesion size and operator. Suspicious findings usually need further imaging (mammography, CT/MRI) and tissue sampling (fine‑needle or core biopsy) for a definitive diagnosis.
