A shoulder ultrasound visualizes soft-tissue structures around the shoulder, including rotator cuff tendons (detecting tendinopathy, partial or full-thickness tears), subacromial–subdeltoid bursa (bursitis), calcific deposits, joint or bursal fluid, and synovial thickening. It allows dynamic assessment to reproduce symptoms and guides injections or aspirations. It is less effective for deep intra-articular cartilage or bone detail, for which MRI or X‑ray may be needed.

For shoulder pain, plain X‑ray is usually the first scan to check bones and joint alignment. For soft‑tissue problems, MRI gives the most comprehensive assessment (rotator cuff, labrum, cartilage). Ultrasound is an effective, cheaper, dynamic option for rotator cuff tendons. MR arthrography is used if labral tears are suspected; CT helps evaluate complex fractures or pre‑op bone detail.

To prepare for a shoulder ultrasound, wear loose clothing or a sleeveless top (you may be asked to change into a gown) and remove jewelry. Avoid applying creams, oils, or deodorant on the shoulder that day. Bring any previous imaging or referral notes. No fasting is needed. Arrive a few minutes early and tell staff about implants, recent surgeries, or allergies.

Indications for shoulder ultrasound include evaluation of suspected rotator cuff tendinopathy or partial/full‑thickness tears, subacromial–subdeltoid bursitis, impingement, calcific tendinopathy, and long‑head biceps tendon pathology. It detects joint effusion, synovitis, soft‑tissue masses, and foreign bodies, allows dynamic assessment, and is used to guide diagnostic or therapeutic injections and aspirations and to monitor treatment or post‑operative recovery.

Yes — shoulder ultrasound can identify many signs of arthritis, especially inflammatory types: joint effusion, synovial thickening, synovitis, bursitis, tendon involvement and superficial bone erosions. It is limited for evaluating deep glenohumeral cartilage and subtle bone/joint-space changes that X-ray or MRI detect better. Ultrasound is a useful, real-time, noninvasive complementary tool and often guides injections.

Ultrasound can detect pregnancy and fetal growth, ectopic pregnancy, and placental issues; organ conditions such as gallstones, liver disease, kidney stones or hydronephrosis, and enlarged organs; pelvic issues like ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids; soft-tissue masses, abscesses and fluid collections; vascular problems (DVT, arterial stenosis) via Doppler; and heart valve and function abnormalities on echocardiography.
