Appointments often include brief preparation and discussion, so plan for around 30 to 60 minutes total. The scan is noninvasive, usually painless, and clinicians can often give immediate results.

Usually you’ll need to expose only the area being scanned. For abdominal or pelvic scans you may remove clothing and wear a gown; pelvic ultrasound may require a full bladder or a transvaginal probe (which will need consent and a drape).
