Ultrasound KUB, in Visit Clinic

A KUB ultrasound evaluates the kidneys, ureters and bladder to detect organ size and structure, stones, cysts, masses, hydronephrosis or obstruction, and bladder abnormalities such as urinary retention or wall changes. It is performed for flank or abdominal pain, blood in the urine, recurrent infections, suspected obstruction or congenital anomalies, and to monitor kidney disease or follow up after treatment.

To prepare for a KUB (kidneys, ureters, bladder) ultrasound, follow your clinic’s instructions: usually arrive with a full bladder (drink about 500–1000 mL water an hour before and don’t urinate). Some centers ask for 6–8 hours fasting to reduce bowel gas. Wear loose clothing, remove jewelry, bring prior imaging, and tell staff about pregnancy or medications. Arrive a little early.

A normal KUB x‑ray shows kidneys of normal size, shape and position with no visible stones or abnormal calcifications; ureters not dilated; bladder with normal outline and no thickening; no abnormal bowel gas patterns, free air, or signs of obstruction; and no unexpected soft‑tissue masses or foreign bodies. Incidental surgical clips or benign calcifications may be noted.

A KUB (kidneys, ureters, bladder) ultrasound usually takes about 15–30 minutes. In straightforward cases it can be as short as 10 minutes; complex exams, difficulty visualizing structures, or needing extra views can extend it to 40–45 minutes. Allow extra time for check-in and preparation—some centers require a full bladder, so you may need to drink water beforehand.

Usually painless; you may feel cold gel and light pressure from the probe. Holding a full bladder can be uncomfortable, and if your abdomen is already tender the pressure might cause some pain. Tell the sonographer if you’re uncomfortable — they can adjust technique or pause. The exam is noninvasive, uses no radiation, and is generally safe and well tolerated.

Early signs of kidney problems include changes in urination (more or less frequent, foamy, dark, bloody, or painful), swelling of ankles, feet or around the eyes, persistent fatigue, nausea or loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating, and unexplained shortness of breath. You may also notice high blood pressure or persistent itching — seek medical evaluation if these symptoms appear.
