What is a Liver Function Test(LFT) Test in Visit Clinic?

What is Liver Function Test(LFT)?

Liver Function Test(LFT) is a blood test that evaluates liver health by measuring a key enzyme or metabolic marker produced by liver cells. It is a standard component of a liver function panel (LFT) and is used by gastroenterologists to detect, diagnose, and monitor liver disease at an early stage.

What does Liver Function Test(LFT) measure?

Liver function tests measure enzymes, bilirubin, and proteins that tell how well the liver works. Common measures include ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin, albumin, and total protein. The liver processes nutrients, makes important proteins, removes toxins, and produces bile for digestion. Liver enzymes released into the bloodstream correlate with the degree of liver cell damage , mild elevations suggest early fatty liver or medication effects, while very high values indicate acute hepatitis or significant injury. The test uses a blood sample and results are typically available the same day.

What do the results of Liver Function Test(LFT) mean?

Results are reported in units per litre (U/L) or mg/dL. A result within the reference range indicates the liver is functioning normally. Mild elevations (2 to 3 times normal) are common in fatty liver disease and often reverse with lifestyle changes. Elevations above 10 times normal are considered severe and indicate viral hepatitis, drug-induced injury, or acute liver failure , requiring urgent specialist review.

Liver Function Test(LFT) Test Preparation in Visit Clinic

Fasting and dietary instructions:

Do not eat or drink anything except plain water for 8 to 12 hours before the test. You may drink water freely , staying hydrated makes veins easier to locate and the blood draw quicker. Avoid tea, coffee, milk, juice, and chewing gum during the fasting window.

Medication guidance:

Continue taking all regular medication as prescribed unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise. Inform the clinic staff about all medications and supplements you are taking so results can be interpreted with full context.

What to bring:

Carry your doctor's prescription or test requisition, a valid photo ID, and your corporate OPD insurance card if using cashless benefits. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the inside of your elbow , short sleeves or a rolled-up sleeve , for a comfortable blood draw.

Timing:

Most blood tests produce the most consistent results when done in the morning. Visit Clinic offers slots from 8 AM. Book online at getvisitapp.com/visit-clinic , it takes under two minutes and confirms your exact appointment time.

Why Take a Liver Function Test(LFT) Test in Visit Clinic?

When does a doctor order Liver Function Test(LFT)?

A gastroenterologist or general physician orders Liver Function Test(LFT) when liver involvement is suspected based on symptoms or blood test history. Common triggers include new or worsening jaundice, a previous abnormal LFT, diagnosis of hepatitis B or C, metabolic syndrome, heavy alcohol use, or a recent viral illness with liver symptoms. It is also standard in annual health packages for adults above 35.

Who should get Liver Function Test(LFT) done?

The Liver Function Test panel is a common blood profile used when doctors suspect liver disease, during routine health checks, or before starting medicines that can affect the liver. Symptoms like jaundice, abdominal pain, dark urine, or unexplained fatigue often prompt testing. Liver disease is often silent in its early stages , most patients with fatty liver or early hepatitis feel normal until the liver is significantly damaged. This makes periodic testing essential for anyone with risk factors, including obesity, diabetes, heavy alcohol use, or long-term medication processed by the liver.

What happens after the results are ready?

Book a follow-up consultation at Visit Clinic to discuss the results. Your doctor will interpret the findings, answer your questions, and advise on treatment or monitoring. If results are abnormal, the follow-up will be prioritised accordingly. Reports are accessible digitally and shareable with any hospital or specialist in Bengaluru.
