Leptospira DNA PCR - Qualitative, in Visit Clinic

The PCR test for leptospirosis is a molecular assay that detects Leptospira DNA in blood, urine, or cerebrospinal fluid. It enables early, specific diagnosis during the acute phase (typically in the first week in blood; later in urine), is faster than culture, and is used alongside serology. A negative PCR does not exclude infection, especially after antibiotics or outside the optimal sampling window.

A Leptospira test detects evidence of infection with Leptospira bacteria. Molecular tests (PCR) identify bacterial DNA in blood or urine early in illness; culture can isolate the organism. Serologic tests (ELISA, MAT) detect immune response—IgM indicates recent/acute infection, IgG suggests past or later-stage disease. Testing choice depends on timing of symptoms and clinical suspicion.

Leptospira PCR testing typically yields results within 24–48 hours after the laboratory receives the sample; some reference labs or rapid real‑time PCR can report within a few hours. Turnaround may extend to 48–72 hours depending on lab workload and confirmatory steps. PCR is most reliable in the first week of illness (blood) and later in urine, so sample timing affects diagnostic utility.

Leptospira testing costs vary by country, test type and lab. Typical ranges: in India approximately ₹300–2,000 for serology; in the US antibody tests often $50–250 and PCR $100–500; NHS patients are tested free through public services though private testing may cost about £50–£150. Prices depend on ELISA/MAT vs PCR and whether testing is public or private—check local labs or clinicians.

A Leptospira positive result means laboratory detection of Leptospira bacteria or antibodies, indicating infection (leptospirosis). It can cause flu-like symptoms—fever, muscle pain, headache—and in severe cases jaundice, kidney or liver dysfunction, and bleeding. Transmission is usually via contact with contaminated water or animal urine. Prompt medical assessment and antibiotic treatment are important; follow-up depends on severity.
