A carotid Doppler (carotid duplex ultrasound) is a non‑invasive test using ultrasound to image the carotid arteries and assess blood flow. It detects plaque, narrowing (stenosis) and turbulence that increase stroke risk. The painless scan uses a gel and probe on the neck to produce grayscale images, color flow maps and velocity waveforms, and typically takes 15–30 minutes without radiation.

A carotid Doppler (carotid ultrasound) is a non‑invasive, generally painless test. A warm gel is applied and a small probe presses lightly on the neck; you may feel mild pressure or brief discomfort if more pressure is needed, but no sharp pain. The procedure is quick, safe, and does not use radiation. Most people tolerate it without problems.

Warning signs of a blocked carotid artery include sudden weakness, numbness, or paralysis on one side of the body; slurred or confused speech and trouble understanding others; sudden vision loss in one eye; sudden severe headache, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; facial droop; trouble swallowing; and transient ischemic attack (TIA) symptoms that come on quickly. Seek emergency care immediately.

A positive Doppler test indicates abnormal or reduced blood flow in the examined vessel, suggesting issues such as deep vein thrombosis or arterial blockage. Management depends on location and severity: further imaging (duplex ultrasound or CT angiography), urgent anticoagulation for suspected clots, possible thrombolysis or surgery, and referral to a vascular specialist. Close monitoring and follow-up prevent complications like embolism or tissue ischemia.

Carotid Doppler is used to evaluate carotid artery narrowing. It’s indicated for people with recent stroke or transient ischemic attack, sudden focal neurological symptoms, or a detected carotid bruit. It’s also considered for asymptomatic patients with high vascular risk (peripheral artery disease, coronary artery disease) or before certain surgeries to assess stenosis that might need treatment.

An abnormal carotid Doppler usually indicates plaque or narrowing (stenosis) of the carotid arteries, increasing stroke risk. It prompts further evaluation (CT/MR angiography or specialist review), aggressive vascular risk management (antiplatelet therapy, statins, blood pressure and diabetes control, smoking cessation) and periodic surveillance. Significant stenosis may require procedures such as carotid endarterectomy or stenting to lower stroke risk.
