Antimony is used primarily as antimony trioxide in flame retardants for plastics, textiles and electronics; as an alloying element with lead to harden batteries, bearings and solders; in semiconductor devices (infrared detectors, diodes); in glass, ceramics and pigments; and historically in medicine and as antiparasitic drugs for leishmaniasis. It also serves as a catalyst and in some ammunition and cable sheathing.

The old name for antimony is stibium, the Latin term used by ancient Romans and alchemists. The mineral form, stibnite (antimony sulfide, Sb2S3), was historically used as kohl. The chemical symbol Sb comes from stibium. Older European variations include antimoine (Old French), but stibium remains the primary historical name.

Antimony can be toxic to humans, with risk depending on dose, chemical form and exposure route. Inhalation or ingestion of soluble antimony compounds can cause irritation, gastrointestinal upset, coughing, shortness of breath, and—after chronic occupational exposure—lung disease, skin problems and heart or liver effects. Trivalent forms tend to be more toxic; some antimony compounds are suspected carcinogens. Treatment is exposure removal and supportive care.

Because it’s rarely found alone in nature — antimony almost always occurs as ores (not the native metal), most commonly as stibnite (Sb2S3). As a metalloid (symbol Sb, from stibium), it’s used in alloys, flame retardants and electronics. It’s toxic at higher exposures, causing respiratory, gastrointestinal and cardiac effects, so handling and exposure limits are tightly controlled.

Antimony is not as expensive as precious metals but is a moderately priced industrial commodity. Its market price fluctuates with supply, demand and purity—refined or electronic-grade material costs more. Concentrated production (notably China) and uses in flame retardants, alloys and batteries affect price. Recycling lowers effective cost, while scarcity, trade restrictions or higher purity requirements increase it.
