AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam passes from front to back, often used when patients can’t stand or for supine exams; it may slightly magnify anterior structures. Lateral view: beam passes from one side to the other, giving a side profile that separates overlapping anatomy and shows depth, alignment, or lesion localization. Both views complement each other for accurate diagnosis.

The lateral thoracic X‑ray is taken with the patient standing or seated sideways against the image receptor, arms raised above the head and elbows flexed, shoulders rolled forward to move the scapulae off the lung fields. The midsagittal plane is parallel to the receptor; the central ray is aimed at T7 (inferior scapular angle) on full inspiration. Include a left/right marker.

Standard thoracic spine radiographic views include anteroposterior (AP) or posterior–anterior (PA) and lateral projections. Additional views are oblique projections (for facet joints/pars), swimmer’s/cervicothoracic lateral to visualize C7–T1, and flexion–extension (dynamic) views when instability is suspected.
