X RAY RIGHT WRIST SCAPHOID VIEW

The scaphoid view is a specialized wrist X‑ray projection that better visualizes the scaphoid bone by positioning the wrist in maximal ulnar deviation and angling the beam to reduce overlapping carpal bones. It highlights the scaphoid waist and poles to detect fractures often missed on routine views. It's used when scaphoid injury is suspected; nondisplaced fractures may still require CT or MRI for confirmation.

The best approach is a standard three‑view wrist series: posteroanterior (PA), lateral and oblique. PA assesses carpal spacing and alignment; lateral shows sagittal displacement and distal radius/ulna relationships; oblique better demonstrates scaphoid and trapezium. If a scaphoid fracture is suspected, add an ulnar‑deviation PA or dedicated scaphoid view to improve fracture detection. This three‑view series is the standard initial imaging.

The best view is the dedicated scaphoid projection: a PA wrist with maximal ulnar deviation and a 10–30° cranial (toward elbow) x‑ray tube angulation. This elongates the scaphoid and minimizes foreshortening, improving fracture visualization. Standard PA/AP, oblique and lateral views are useful adjuncts, but the PA ulnar‑deviation (scaphoid) view is most sensitive for detecting scaphoid fractures.

The right scaphoid is the small, boat-shaped carpal bone on the thumb (radial) side of the right wrist. It sits between the radius and the bones of the hand, helping stabilize wrist motion and transfer load. Scaphoid fractures are common after falls on an outstretched hand and have a tenuous blood supply, risking nonunion or avascular necrosis without prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Scaphoid X‑rays are commonly performed after wrist falls in adolescents and young adults (typically teens through about 30 years), because scaphoid fractures are most frequent in this group. X‑rays may be done at any age if a scaphoid fracture is suspected, but in very young children ossification can limit X‑ray sensitivity; persistent suspicion may need repeat imaging or MRI/CT.

The scaphoid is a key wrist bone that bridges the hand and forearm, stabilizing the carpal bones and transmitting forces during grip and wrist motion. Its blood supply is tenuous—especially to the proximal part—so fractures risk nonunion and avascular necrosis, which can cause chronic pain, loss of wrist motion, and diminished grip strength. Prompt diagnosis and treatment preserve function.
