X Ray Right Wrist Lateral View

A lateral wrist X‑ray provides a side (sagittal) view of the distal radius and ulna, carpal bones, and bases of the metacarpals. It shows alignment of the radiocarpal, distal radioulnar and midcarpal joints, dorsal/volar displacement of fractures, lunate and perilunate dislocations, and carpal relationships. It also detects joint space narrowing, fractures, subluxations, and gross soft‑tissue swelling.

A lateral view X‑ray is a side-to-side radiographic projection where the X‑ray beam passes laterally through the body onto the detector, producing a profile image. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views by showing depth, alignment, displacement, and hidden pathology. Commonly used for chest, spine, skull, and extremities, it helps localize lesions and evaluate structural relationships not visible on frontal images.

Standard wrist radiographs include PA (posteroanterior), lateral and oblique views. PA shows the distal radius/ulna, carpal rows and joint spaces; lateral assesses carpal alignment and anterior–posterior displacement. An additional scaphoid view (PA with ulnar deviation) improves detection of scaphoid fractures. Specialized views—radial/ulnar deviation, clenched‑fist, or carpal‑tunnel (tangential)—help show subtle fractures, ligament gaps, or compression.

The lateral view of the hand X-ray is a side projection showing bones in profile—phalanges, metacarpals and carpus—with digits superimposed. Obtained with the hand placed true lateral (ulnar border on the detector, fingers extended or gently flexed), it best demonstrates sagittal alignment, dorsal/volar displacement, joint congruity, and occult fractures or foreign bodies that may be missed on frontal views.

A lateral X‑ray is a side‑view image and is not inherently left or right. The technologist labels the film as "left lateral" or "right lateral" with a marker showing which side was closest to the detector. Always check that marker or the radiology report to know the side. For chest studies, a left lateral is commonly used to keep the heart nearer the detector.

A wrist X‑ray cost varies by country, facility and insurance. In the US it’s commonly about $50–$300 out‑of‑pocket (uninsured or emergency rates can reach $100–$1,000). In the UK it’s free on the NHS; private clinics charge roughly £50–£200. In India typical fees are about ₹200–₹2,000. Additional charges may apply for urgent care, multiple views, or radiologist reports.
