X Ray Right Wrist AP and Lateral View

A right wrist AP and lateral X-ray are two plain radiograph views used to evaluate the wrist. The AP (anteroposterior) view images the wrist front-to-back; the lateral view images it from the side. Together they assess fractures, dislocations, bone alignment, joint spaces, and arthritis. The exam is quick, noninvasive, uses low-dose radiation, and is commonly the first-line test after trauma or pain.

AP (anteroposterior) view means the X‑ray beam passes from the front to the back of the body onto the detector; it’s common for supine or portable exams and may magnify structures. Lateral view projects the beam from one side to the other, giving a side profile that helps localize lesions, assess alignment, and reveal findings hidden on AP images.

A lateral wrist X‑ray provides a side view to assess bone alignment, detect fractures or dislocations, and evaluate carpal bone relationships and joint spaces. It reveals dorsal/volar displacement, periarticular injuries and occult fractures that may be missed on frontal films. This view helps identify growth‑plate injuries in children, guides treatment decisions (casting vs surgery), and monitors healing or wrist instability.

The best approach is a standard three‑view wrist series: posteroanterior (PA), lateral and oblique. These views together assess bone integrity, alignment and joint spaces. For suspected scaphoid fractures, add a scaphoid view (PA with ulnar deviation) to better visualize the waist. If X‑rays are inconclusive but suspicion remains, consider CT or MRI for further evaluation.

Wrist X‑ray costs vary by country and setting. In India outpatient X‑rays typically cost about ₹200–₹1,200. In the US outpatient X‑rays often range roughly $100–$400, while emergency or hospital charges can run $200–$1,000+ depending on insurance. In the UK X‑rays are free for NHS patients; private scans commonly cost about £40–£150. Prices depend on facility, number of views and reporting fees.

Plain wrist X-rays visualize bones and joint alignment but do not directly show nerves or nerve damage. They can, however, reveal fractures, dislocations, bone fragments, or arthritis that may compress or threaten nerves. If nerve injury is suspected, clinicians use clinical examination plus targeted tests — ultrasound, MRI, or electrodiagnostic studies (nerve conduction studies/EMG) to assess nerve structure and function.
