A lateral view is an X‑ray projection taken from the side, with the beam passing from one lateral aspect of the body to the other, creating a side‑on image perpendicular to anterior–posterior views. It separates overlapping structures to show depth and alignment, helping detect fractures, dislocations, effusions, and soft‑tissue abnormalities. Patients stand, sit, or lie with the affected side against the detector.

The lateral toe projection is a radiographic side view of a toe obtained with the digit placed in true lateral position and the x‑ray beam directed perpendicular to the interphalangeal joint (for the great toe) or the PIP joint (for other toes). It visualizes phalangeal bones, joint alignment, fractures, dislocations and foreign bodies, and should include the entire toe and adjacent MTP joint.

Place the patient in a lateral recumbent position with the affected foot nearest the image receptor; flex the knee and position the foot so the lateral aspect contacts the detector and the plantar surface is vertical. Center the x‑ray beam to the base of the third metatarsal, perpendicular to the receptor. Collimate to include toes through calcaneus (and ankle if indicated), use immobilization and gonadal shielding, and ask the patient to remain still.

Stand barefoot holding a chair for balance. Keep your heel down and either spread and lift your toes sideways (toe abduction) or slide them laterally across the floor. Hold each position 3–5 seconds; repeat 10–15 times per foot for 2–3 sets. Progress with a resistance band or single‑leg balance. Stop if sharp pain occurs and see a clinician for persistent pain, swelling, or numbness.

A lateral view is a side-to-side radiographic or anatomical projection—showing the body from either the left or right side. The view itself doesn’t specify which side unless labeled. In chest X-rays the left lateral projection is typically used as standard, because placing the left side against the detector reduces heart magnification and improves mediastinal detail.

The lateral view of the foot is a radiographic projection taken from the outer (lateral) side to visualize the entire osseous alignment in profile. It demonstrates the calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuboid, cuneiforms, metatarsals and phalanges, plus joint spaces and soft-tissue contours.
