AP view (anteroposterior) is a frontal shoulder X‑ray taken with the beam passing from front to back. It displays the clavicle, acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints, and proximal humerus. Performed upright or supine with the arm neutral or mildly rotated, it helps detect fractures, dislocations, joint‑space narrowing and major bone alignment issues; additional views often complement it.

The three standard shoulder X‑ray views are: 1) AP (anteroposterior) — shows the humeral head, glenoid and joint space; 2) Axillary — an inferior–superior projection that best assesses glenohumeral alignment and dislocation; 3) Scapular Y (lateral) — a true lateral view highlighting the scapular body, acromion and coracoid for fracture and alignment evaluation.

An AP (anteroposterior) X-ray view means the X-ray beam travels from the front (anterior) of the body to the back (posterior). It’s often used for portable or supine exams when patients can’t stand. AP films can magnify anterior structures—making the heart look larger—so they’re useful in emergencies but less ideal than PA views for accurate cardiac and mediastinal assessment.

A shoulder AP (anteroposterior) X‑ray typically takes about 5–10 minutes in the imaging room. The actual radiation exposure is under a second; most time is spent positioning the arm, giving instructions, and checking image quality. If extra views are required or there’s waiting/administrative processing, the appointment can last 15–30 minutes. The procedure is quick and usually causes minimal discomfort.

It’s commonly used when patients can’t stand (supine or portable exams). Compared with PA views, AP projections can magnify anterior structures like the heart and slightly alter perceived anatomy.

Wear a loose, easily removable top or change into the hospital gown provided. Remove bras with metal underwires, necklaces, earrings, body piercings, watches, and any clothing with metal fasteners, buttons, or zippers over the shoulder area. Leave comfortable undergarments without metal if allowed. Tell staff about implants or prostheses—they may need adjustment or shielding.
