X RAY RIGHT SHOULDER AP AND AXIAL VIEW

The axial (axillary) shoulder X-ray is an under‑arm projection that images the glenohumeral joint from beneath, showing the relationship of the humeral head to the glenoid. It’s especially useful for detecting anterior or posterior dislocations, evaluating glenoid rim involvement and proximal humeral fractures. The standard technique needs about 90° arm abduction; modified (Velpeau) views are used if abduction isn’t possible.

An AP (anteroposterior) shoulder X-ray is taken with the X-ray beam passing from front to back while the patient sits or stands, arm in a neutral position. It visualizes the clavicle, acromioclavicular joint, glenoid and humeral head to detect fractures, dislocations and joint-space changes. It’s usually an initial view and is often combined with axillary or scapular‑Y views.

The three standard shoulder X‑ray views are: 1) Anteroposterior (AP) — assesses the glenohumeral joint, alignment and fractures; 2) Axillary — visualizes the glenoid‑humeral relationship and dislocations; 3) Scapular Y (lateral) — shows the scapular body, acromion and coracoacromial relationships to detect displacements and fractures. Together they evaluate joint space, bone integrity and dislocation.

The shoulder axillary view is an X‑ray taken with the beam directed through the axilla and the arm abducted to visualize the glenohumeral joint from below. It clearly shows the relationship of the humeral head to the glenoid, helping detect anterior or posterior dislocations, proximal humerus and glenoid rim fractures, and joint congruity when standard AP views are inconclusive. It can be done upright or supine.

A shoulder axial view isn’t inherently painful, but the required arm positioning (abduction or placing the hand behind the head) can cause discomfort or significant pain in people with fractures, dislocations, or acute shoulder injuries. Radiographers will modify technique or use alternative views (Velpeau, modified axillary, scapular Y) or CT to avoid worsening pain — tell staff if positioning is painful so they can adapt.

An axial X-ray is an imaging view that captures cross-sectional (transverse) slices of the body by directing X-ray beams along the horizontal (axial) plane. Commonly produced by CT scanners or as axial projections in radiography, these images show anatomy in top-to-bottom slices, aiding assessment of bones, organs, and injuries. It uses ionizing radiation for diagnostic clarity.
