An ankle lateral view X‑ray visualizes the ankle from the side to assess bone integrity, joint alignment, and soft‑tissue swelling. It helps detect fractures of the tibia, fibula, talus or calcaneus, joint dislocation, arthritis changes, and foreign bodies, and guides pre‑ and post‑reduction evaluation. It complements other views to plan treatment and monitor healing.

Place the patient in a lateral recumbent or seated position with the affected side down. Position the image receptor against the medial ankle so the lateral malleolus contacts it. Dorsiflex the foot to 90° and rotate until tibia and fibula are superimposed in a true lateral. Center the beam on the medial malleolus, collimate to include distal tibia/fibula and hindfoot, and immobilize.

The three standard radiographic views of a right ankle are: anteroposterior (AP) — shows tibia, fibula and talus alignment; mortise view — a 15–20° internally rotated AP that opens the ankle mortise to assess joint space and syndesmosis; and lateral view — profiles the talus, calcaneus and posterior malleolus for fractures, displacement, and soft‑tissue assessment.

The right lateral ankle is the outer side of the right ankle joint, centered around the lateral malleolus (the distal end of the fibula). It includes the lateral ligaments (anterior talofibular, calcaneofibular, posterior talofibular), peroneal tendons, and nearby nerves and blood vessels. This area is commonly checked for sprains, instability, swelling, and bony tenderness.

A lateral view on an X-ray is an image taken from the side of the body, perpendicular to the frontal (AP/PA) view. It shows depth and spatial relationships of bones and soft tissues, revealing alignment, displacements, fractures, joint spaces, and fluid levels that may be hidden on frontal images. It’s commonly used for spine, chest, skull, and joint assessment for complementary diagnostic detail.

Ankle x‑rays are performed to check for fractures, dislocations, and bone alignment after injury or trauma. They help identify joint damage, assess arthritis or chronic pain causes, detect foreign bodies, and guide treatment decisions like casting or surgery. X‑rays also monitor healing progress and post‑operative positioning. They’re generally ordered with significant pain, swelling, deformity, or inability to bear weight.
