X Ray Lumbar Spine Lateral and AP View

An X‑ray LS spine AP LAT is a radiographic exam of the lumbosacral (lower back) spine using anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views. It assesses vertebral alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, disc‑space narrowing, and spondylolisthesis. Indicated for trauma, persistent low back pain, or deformity. The test is quick with low radiation; pregnancy is a contraindication and MRI better evaluates soft tissue or nerve issues.

AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam passes from front (anterior) to back (posterior) of the body; patient may be supine or standing; provides a frontal‑plane image useful for chest, abdomen and limb assessments. Lateral view: taken at 90° to AP, with beam passing side‑to‑side; gives a profile view showing depth, alignment, fractures, joint spaces and effusions not seen on AP.

An AP (anteroposterior) view of the lumbar spine is an X‑ray taken with the beam passing from front to back through the lower back. It shows vertebral bodies, disc spaces, pedicles, sacrum and pelvic bones to assess alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, infection or tumours. It’s usually obtained alongside a lateral view and may be taken standing or supine depending on clinical need.

AP and lateral lumbar spine X‑rays provide complementary views: AP shows frontal alignment, pedicles, and coronal deformity; lateral reveals vertebral body heights, disc space narrowing, spondylolisthesis, and sagittal alignment. Together they detect fractures, degenerative change, osteophytes, spinal instability, and hardware position. They’re quick, widely available, and useful for initial assessment and follow‑up before advanced imaging.

A lumbar X‑ray is ordered to assess lower back pain after injury or when red flags appear (fracture, severe/worsening pain, neurological deficits, fever, unexplained weight loss). It detects bone problems—fractures, arthritis, spondylolisthesis, bone infection or tumors—and aids pre‑operative planning and treatment monitoring. It’s limited for discs and nerves, so CT or MRI is used if soft‑tissue or nerve compression is suspected.

Lumbosacral AP and lateral are X‑ray views of the lower spine. "AP" (anteroposterior) images the lumbosacral region front‑to‑back; the lateral view shows it from the side. Together they evaluate alignment, fractures, degenerative changes, disc‑space narrowing and spondylolisthesis. The exam is quick, needs minimal preparation, uses low‑dose radiation, and helps diagnose lower back pain or trauma.
