X Ray LS Spine AP View

A LS spine AP X-ray is an anteroposterior radiograph of the lumbar and sacral spine taken front-to-back. It shows vertebral alignment, bone integrity, fractures, degenerative changes and gross disc-space narrowing. It’s quick, widely available and helps screen for trauma, pain or suspected pathology, often alongside lateral views for full assessment. Radiation exposure is low but minimized when possible.

The AP (anteroposterior) view of the spine is a frontal X‑ray projection where the beam passes from the front to the back of the body. It demonstrates vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, pedicles and transverse processes, and is used to evaluate alignment, fractures, deformity (such as scoliosis) and degenerative change. It’s usually obtained upright or supine and reviewed with a lateral view.

The four standard lumbar spine radiographic views are: 1) Anteroposterior (AP) — frontal view of vertebral bodies; 2) Lateral — shows vertebral alignment, disc spaces, and canal; 3) Oblique — visualizes facet joints and pars interarticularis; 4) Flexion–extension (dynamic) or lateral bending — assesses instability and range of motion (sometimes a dedicated L5–S1 "spot" view is added). These views guide diagnosis of fractures, degenerative change, and spondylolysis.

AP projection is generally preferred for routine lumbar spine X‑rays because it gives a standard, reproducible view of vertebral bodies and disc spaces. PA can reduce dose to anterior organs (breasts/gonads) and is used selectively (e.g., whole‑spine/scoliosis imaging), but may alter spinal curvature and magnification. Overall, AP remains the common diagnostic choice unless dose reduction is prioritized.

AP (anteroposterior) X‑ray view means the X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) of the body to the back (posterior) toward the detector. It’s used for bedside or supine patients who can’t stand. Compared with PA views, AP can magnify structures (e.g., cardiac silhouette) and may reduce image quality, so findings are interpreted with attention to positioning and technique.

The lumbosacral (LS) spine problem refers to pain or dysfunction in the lower back where the lumbar spine meets the sacrum. Causes include disc degeneration or herniation, spinal stenosis, facet joint arthritis, trauma or muscle strain. Symptoms: local low back pain, stiffness, leg pain, numbness or weakness (sciatica), and reduced mobility. Treatment ranges from pain control and physiotherapy to injections or surgery.
