X Ray Left Thumb Lateral view

Seat the patient with the elbow flexed and forearm on the table. Place the hand so the thumb is in true lateral: palmar surface against the image receptor, thumb long axis parallel to the receptor, other fingers flexed away or taped. Center the beam at the metacarpophalangeal joint, collimate to the thumb, use a perpendicular beam and appropriate exposure, immobilize and apply a side marker.

Standard thumb X‑ray views: AP (or PA), lateral (true lateral), and 45° oblique. For suspected base‑of‑thumb injuries or CMC joint pathology, specialized views include Robert’s view (true AP of the first CMC), Bett’s view (modified oblique axial for the trapeziometacarpal joint), and stress views to assess instability or Bennett/Rolando fractures. Technique depends on the clinical question.

A lateral view in X-ray is a side-to-side radiographic projection taken with the X-ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views by separating overlapping structures, improving visualization of depth, joint alignment, spinal curvatures, fluid levels, and occult fractures. Positioning varies by body part to optimize anatomy and reduce distortion.

When your thumb is lateral, it’s positioned on the outer side of the hand—away from the body’s midline—when the palms face forward (anatomical position). It sits on the radial side of the forearm and allows movements such as abduction and opposition. “Lateral” is a directional anatomical term, not inherently a sign of injury unless accompanied by pain or deformity.

A lateral X‑ray is a side view and can be either left or right. For chest radiographs the usual standard is a left lateral (patient’s left side against the detector) to reduce cardiac magnification, but the projection should always be labeled L or R. If an image lacks a marker, check the radiology report or ask the imaging department for confirmation.

The lateral view of a hand X‑ray is a side projection showing the phalanges, metacarpals and carpals in profile. With the elbow flexed 90° and the hand placed on its medial side, the fingers are aligned so the metacarpals are superimposed. This projection assesses bone alignment, joint dislocation, subtle fractures and soft‑tissue swelling, and helps detect angulation or foreign bodies.
