AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are standard X‑ray projections. AP means the X‑ray beam travels from front to back (anteroposterior), often used when patients can’t stand; it can magnify structures. Lateral view shoots the beam from one side to the other, providing a side profile to localize abnormalities, assess depth, and complement AP images for fractures, lung pathology, spine, and joint evaluation.

The AP (anteroposterior) view is an x‑ray projection in which the beam passes from the anterior (palmar) surface toward the posterior (dorsal) surface. The finger is extended and centered on the detector with the central ray perpendicular to the PIP joint and collimation including distal phalanx through the MCP joint. It assesses alignment, fractures, joint spaces, and foreign bodies.

The finger lateral X‑ray is taken with the affected finger in true lateral: patient seated with forearm on the table, the lateral surface of the finger placed against the detector and adjacent fingers held away or taped. Ensure nail beds and phalangeal condyles are superimposed to confirm true lateral. Collimate from distal phalanx through the distal metacarpal and center the beam at the PIP joint.

A standard finger X-ray typically uses three views: anteroposterior (AP), oblique, and lateral to fully assess bone alignment, joint spaces, and detect fractures. In simple cases two views may be taken, but three views are generally recommended for accurate fracture detection and preoperative planning. Additional views can be added for complex injuries or suspected subtle fractures.

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are two radiographic views. AP projects X‑rays front-to-back while lateral projects side-to-side, giving orthogonal perspectives.
