A weight-bearing lateral foot X‑ray is a side-view radiograph taken while the patient stands and loads the foot. It demonstrates bone alignment, joint spaces and arch height under physiological weight, helping detect fractures, midfoot or hindfoot instability, arch collapse (flatfoot), Lisfranc injuries and arthritic changes that may be missed when the foot is imaged non–weight-bearing. It's used to assess function and guide treatment.

Get an X‑ray when foot pain follows trauma with inability to bear weight, visible deformity, or focal bone tenderness (suspected fracture), significant swelling, bruising, or reduced movement, or if pain persists despite rest for several weeks. Also consider imaging with signs of infection (redness, warmth, fever), suspected foreign body, or unexplained localized pain that doesn’t improve—your clinician will decide based on exam.

A weight-bearing scan is an imaging test performed while the patient stands or bears weight, showing bones and joints under normal load. Often done with X‑ray or CT, it reveals alignment, joint space changes, instability, deformity, and occult fractures that may be missed when lying down.
