X Ray Left Ankle AP and Lateral View

An ankle AP and lateral (lat) X-ray are two standard radiographic views—anteroposterior (AP) and lateral—used to image the ankle bones and joint. They show bone alignment, joint spaces, fractures, dislocations and surrounding swelling. The AP view is taken front-to-back; the lateral is taken side-on. Together they provide complementary angles to diagnose injury, monitor healing and guide treatment decisions.

AP (anteroposterior) view: X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body; commonly used for supine or portable exams and can magnify anterior structures. Lateral view: beam passes from one side to the other, producing a side profile that separates overlapping tissues and adds depth; typically obtained with AP/PA views to localize lesions, fractures, or assess alignment.

The lateral view of the ankle is an X‑ray taken from the outer side, showing the tibia, fibula, talus and calcaneus in profile. It displays tibiotalar and subtalar joint spaces, bone alignment and the posterior malleolus. Performed with the limb in a true lateral position and beam perpendicular, it helps detect fractures, dislocations, joint effusion and alignment abnormalities.

A doctor orders ankle AP (anteroposterior) and lateral X-rays to evaluate bones and joint alignment after injury or for chronic pain. These views detect fractures, dislocations, widening of the ankle mortise, avulsion fragments, arthritis, bone lesions or foreign bodies, and assess post‑operative healing. They help guide treatment decisions such as casting, surgery, or further imaging like CT or MRI.

Ankle AP and lateral X‑rays themselves are not painful — they’re quick, noninvasive imaging tests. Discomfort usually comes from moving or placing an injured ankle into required positions, especially for weight‑bearing views. Radiographers can adjust positioning or use non‑weight‑bearing views if pain is severe. Tell the technologist about pain so they can minimize movement and support the joint during imaging.

AP stands for "anteroposterior." In an AP X‑ray the X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body. It’s often used when patients can’t stand (supine or seated). AP views can magnify the heart and change soft‑tissue appearance compared with PA films, so radiologists account for positioning and detector distance when interpreting them.
