X Ray KUB

A KUB is a plain noncontrast abdominal X‑ray that images the kidneys, ureters and bladder. It’s used to evaluate urinary tract stones and calcifications, bowel gas patterns, organ size, and causes of abdominal pain such as obstruction or foreign bodies. Often obtained supine and sometimes upright or with focused views, it provides quick, low‑dose screening but limited soft‑tissue detail.

A KUB X‑ray can detect many kidney stones that are radiopaque (calcium‑containing), but it misses radiolucent stones (uric acid, some cystine) and very small stones. Non‑contrast CT is far more sensitive and is the preferred test for suspected renal colic.
