X Ray Hip Lateral View

A lateral view of the hip bone is a side radiographic or anatomical perspective that shows the outer (lateral) aspect of the pelvic bone and proximal femur. It highlights the acetabulum, femoral head and neck, greater trochanter, and surrounding contours, helping detect fractures, dislocations, joint-space narrowing, bone lesions, or impingement. It's used clinically to assess hip alignment and pathology.

The three standard hip X‑ray views are: 1) Anteroposterior (AP) pelvis/hip — shows overall pelvic alignment, joint space, acetabulum and proximal femora; 2) Frog‑leg lateral (true lateral) — demonstrates femoral head, neck and anterior/posterior contours; 3) Cross‑table (shoot‑through) lateral — a trauma lateral used when the patient cannot rotate the limb for a frog‑leg.

A 4‑view hip X‑ray is a set of four radiographic projections of the pelvis and hip taken from different angles—usually an anteroposterior (AP) pelvis, AP hip, and two lateral/oblique views (commonly frog‑leg and cross‑table or oblique projections). Together they provide a comprehensive assessment of the femoral head, acetabulum, joint space, fractures, dislocation, arthritis, and prosthesis positioning.

The lateral hip refers to the outer side of the hip — over the greater trochanter and surrounding muscles (gluteus medius and minimus), tendons, and bursa. It helps stabilize the pelvis during walking. Lateral hip pain commonly comes from trochanteric bursitis, gluteal tendinopathy, or referred spinal problems, and is assessed by exam and sometimes imaging; treatments include physiotherapy or injections.

A lateral view is an imaging projection taken from the side of the body, producing a profile image of anatomical structures. It complements frontal (AP/PA) views by showing depth and anterior–posterior relationships, improving localization of lesions, fractures, or fluid. Commonly used for chest, spine, skull, and joint X‑rays, it helps detect abnormalities hidden on front‑to‑back images.

The lateral hip approach is commonly called the Hardinge approach, also referred to as the direct lateral approach. It involves an incision over the greater trochanter and splitting the gluteus medius and minimus to access the hip joint while preserving posterior structures. It is frequently used for hip arthroplasty and tends to lower the risk of posterior dislocation compared with posterior approaches.
