X Ray Dorsolumbar Spine Lateral View

A dorso‑lumbar lateral view is a side X‑ray of the thoracic‑lumbar junction and lumbar spine. It shows vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, alignment and posterior elements to detect fractures, degenerative change, spondylolisthesis or acute trauma. The patient stands or lies on their side while the X‑ray beam passes laterally, helping assess spinal curvature, disc height and gross soft‑tissue shadows.

A lateral view of the dorsal (thoracic) spine is a side radiographic projection that visualizes vertebral bodies, intervertebral disc spaces, posterior elements and overall sagittal alignment/kyphosis. It helps detect compression fractures, vertebral collapse, degenerative changes, alignment abnormalities and certain infections or tumors. The patient is positioned so the X‑ray beam passes from one side to the other, showing profile detail not seen on frontal views.

The four standard lumbar spine views are: 1) Anteroposterior (AP) — shows vertebral bodies and disc spaces; 2) Lateral — assesses sagittal alignment, vertebral height and canal; 3) Oblique — visualizes facet joints and pars interarticularis for spondylolysis; 4) Flexion–extension — dynamic views to evaluate instability or abnormal motion.

A lateral view in X‑ray is a side‑on radiographic projection obtained with the X‑ray beam passing from one side of the body to the other, perpendicular to the front‑to‑back view. It shows depth and the relative positions of structures, helping assess alignment, vertebral bodies, joint spaces, and air‑fluid levels, and aids localization of lesions or foreign bodies not clear on frontal images.

The dorso-lumbar spine (thoracolumbar region) is the junction between the thoracic (dorsal) and lumbar vertebrae, typically around T10–L2 and often focused at T12–L1. It comprises vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments, facet joints and surrounding muscles, and includes the spinal cord/conus medullaris transition. A lateral view is an imaging or observational perspective taken from the side of the body or structure, producing a profile projection. In radiology, a lateral X‑ray is taken at 90° to the frontal (AP/PA) view to show depth, alignment and relationships of bones, joints or soft tissues, helping localize lesions, detect fractures, assess joint spaces and evaluate fluid or air levels.
