X Ray Both Wrists AP and Lateral View

A right wrist AP and lateral X-ray are two standard radiographic views: AP (anteroposterior) shows the wrist from palm-to-back, and lateral shows the side profile. Together they reveal bone alignment, fractures, dislocations, joint space narrowing, and foreign bodies. The exam is quick, uses low radiation, requires specific positioning and removal of jewelry or casts, and helps guide diagnosis and treatment.

AP (anteroposterior) view: X-ray beam passes from front to back of the body; the patient may be supine or standing and this view is used when erect positioning isn’t possible (common for chest, abdomen, pelvis). Lateral view: beam passes from one side to the other, giving a side-on image that shows depth and separates overlapping structures. Together they give orthogonal perspectives for better localization and diagnosis.

A lateral wrist X‑ray is needed to evaluate bone and joint alignment in the sagittal plane after trauma or ongoing wrist pain. It reveals fractures, dislocations, dorsal/volar displacement, carpal instability and intra‑articular extension that may be missed on frontal views. It also helps guide treatment choices and confirms reduction or healing after splinting, casting or surgical fixation.

The wrist AP (anteroposterior) view is an X‑ray with the beam passing from anterior to posterior, producing a frontal image of the distal radius and ulna, proximal carpal bones and metacarpal bases. It assesses fractures, dislocations, bone alignment and joint spaces. Correct forearm and wrist alignment with neutral rotation is essential; AP is usually obtained alongside oblique and lateral views for full evaluation.

An AP ray (anteroposterior radiograph) is an X‑ray taken with the beam entering the front (anterior) and exiting the back (posterior) of the body. Often used for bedside or supine imaging, it’s applied to chest, abdomen, spine and limb exams. AP views can magnify the heart and change appearances compared with PA films, so positioning and clinical context affect interpretation.

A wrist X‑ray shows bones, fractures, dislocations and bony changes but cannot directly visualize or diagnose nerve damage. It may reveal bone fractures, dislocations, or bone spurs that could cause or suggest nerve compression. Evaluation of nerve injury requires clinical examination and specific tests such as nerve conduction studies/EMG, ultrasound, or MRI to assess nerve structure and function.
