Vanadium

Vanadium is a metal used mainly to strengthen steel and other alloys for tools, automotive parts and aerospace components, and as a catalyst in chemical processes. It’s key in vanadium redox flow batteries for large-scale energy storage, and appears in pigments, ceramics and glass. Biologically it’s a trace element under study for insulin‑mimetic effects, but supplements aren’t routinely recommended without medical supervision.

Vanadium is a trace element found in food; low dietary amounts are not harmful. High occupational inhalation (especially vanadium pentoxide) or ingestion of soluble vanadium compounds can cause respiratory irritation, bronchitis, lung damage, gastrointestinal upset and kidney or liver toxicity. Chronic high exposure poses systemic risks. Avoid workplace dust exposure and unregulated vanadium supplements, which lack proven benefit and may be harmful.

Foods relatively high in vanadium include shellfish (mussels, oysters), mushrooms, black pepper and other spices, and green herbs like parsley. Vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, whole grains (oats, barley), legumes—especially soybeans—and some nuts and seeds also contain vanadium. Concentrations vary by soil and processing, and typical dietary intakes are small compared with research doses.

Small amounts of vanadium (and vanadium carbides) greatly increase steel’s tensile strength, toughness, and wear resistance, so vanadium-alloyed steels are significantly stronger than plain carbon steels for many applications.

China currently produces and refines more vanadium than any other country, accounting for the largest share of global output. Other significant vanadium producers and holders of large reserves include Russia, South Africa and Brazil. Production is concentrated where vanadium-bearing magnetite and titaniferous magnetite deposits are processed, with China leading both mining and downstream refining capacity.
