Normal urinary protein excretion is <150 mg/day (ACR <30 mg/g). Persistent proteinuria above 300 mg/day (ACR >300 mg/g) is clinically significant and needs evaluation. Nephrotic-range proteinuria — typically >3.5 g/day — indicates severe glomerular disease and requires urgent assessment. Transient small increases (fever, exercise, posture) can occur, but persistent elevations merit medical investigation.

Use a urine reagent dipstick kit at home. Collect a clean midstream sample (first morning preferred), dip the strip briefly, remove excess, wait the manufacturer’s specified time, then compare the pad color to the chart for a semi-quantitative protein result. Repeat or send a sample to a lab if positive. Seek medical advice if proteinuria is persistent, high, or accompanied by swelling, fatigue, or other symptoms.

Reduce urine protein by controlling blood pressure (target per doctor) using ACE inhibitors or ARBs, and optimizing blood sugar. Use SGLT2 inhibitors when indicated. Lower dietary sodium, avoid excessive dietary protein and NSAIDs, maintain healthy weight and exercise, stop smoking, and treat underlying infections or autoimmune disease. Proteinuria in pregnancy means excess protein in the urine. Small, transient amounts can occur, but new or large proteinuria—especially after 20 weeks—may indicate kidney problems or preeclampsia. It’s detected by dipstick or albumin-to-creatinine ratio and leads to monitoring of blood pressure, urine tests, and fetal wellbeing. Report swelling, severe headaches, visual changes, or abdominal pain promptly.

Drinking adequate water can reduce transient or concentration-related proteinuria by diluting urine and improving renal perfusion, and may lower mild, temporary protein leaks (e.g., after exercise or dehydration). However, persistent or significant proteinuria usually reflects kidney disease and won’t be resolved simply by drinking more fluid; medical evaluation and treatment of the underlying cause are essential.

If protein is high in urine (proteinuria), it usually signals kidney damage or disease. You may notice foamy urine or swelling (edema). Untreated proteinuria can lead to worsening kidney function, higher blood pressure, and increased cardiovascular risk. Doctors will investigate underlying causes (diabetes, hypertension, glomerular disease) and treat them to slow kidney damage and reduce complications.
