A full abdomen ultrasound with contrast is a non‑invasive scan of abdominal organs (liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, bladder and abdominal vessels) using sound waves plus an intravenous microbubble contrast agent to enhance blood flow and lesion detection. It improves characterization of tumors, inflammation and vascular abnormalities. It’s quick, uses no ionizing radiation, may require fasting, and is generally safe with rare allergic reactions.

A whole‑abdomen ultrasound evaluates major abdominal organs and structures: liver (size, cysts, tumors, fatty change), gallbladder and bile ducts (stones, inflammation, dilation), pancreas (mass, inflammation), spleen (size, lesions), kidneys and urinary tract (stones, cysts, hydronephrosis), bladder, abdominal aorta (aneurysm), and detects ascites, localized fluid collections, or masses. It may be limited by bowel gas and body habitus.

You should fast from food for 6–8 hours before a whole abdominal ultrasound to reduce bowel gas; small sips of water are usually permitted and medications may be taken with a few sips. Do not drink large volumes unless instructed to fill your bladder for pelvic/urinary tract imaging (commonly ~500–1,000 mL about 1 hour before).

A whole-abdomen ultrasound typically takes about 20–45 minutes, often around 30 minutes. Time can vary with patient body habitus, need for Doppler imaging, number of organs examined, or additional views; scheduling, preparation and urgent findings can extend the exam to about an hour in some cases. Most routine scans finish within half an hour.

Ultrasound helps detect and characterize cancers of the breast, thyroid, liver (primary tumors and metastases), kidneys, ovaries and uterus, testicles, and prostate (via transrectal scan). It’s also used to evaluate suspicious lymph nodes and superficial soft‑tissue masses and to guide biopsies. Detection is operator- and lesion-dependent; some organs (pancreas, lungs, bone) are poorly assessed and need CT/MRI.

Ultrasound contrast agents (microbubble-based) are generally safe and well tolerated. Serious allergic reactions are rare; most side effects are mild and transient (headache, nausea). They are not nephrotoxic and are preferable to iodinated or gadolinium contrast in kidney disease. Contraindications include known hypersensitivity and unstable cardiopulmonary status. Use under trained supervision with monitoring for rare adverse events.
