Prepare by wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the affected limb and removing jewelry. Do not apply creams, oils or lotions to the area. Bring referral paperwork and any prior imaging reports. There’s usually no fasting or medication change needed; ask the clinic if biopsy, injection, or aspiration is planned. Expect to change into a gown, move the joint, and feel light pressure during the scan.

Yes—musculoskeletal ultrasound can detect many types of muscle damage (tears, strains, hematomas, fluid collections, inflammation) and offers real-time, dynamic assessment and procedural guidance. It’s operator-dependent and generally less sensitive than MRI for deep, complex, or subtle intramuscular injuries and edema. If ultrasound is inconclusive or deeper pathology is suspected, MRI is typically recommended for more detailed evaluation.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is generally very safe. It uses non‑ionizing sound waves, so there’s no radiation exposure and no known long‑term harm. Risks are minimal—occasional transient discomfort from probe pressure or rare infection if skin is broken—and accuracy depends on operator skill. It’s widely used for joints, muscles, tendons, and is safe in pregnancy and for repeat examinations.

A regular (general) ultrasound typically uses lower-frequency probes to image deeper organs—abdomen, pelvis or fetal structures—while a musculoskeletal ultrasound uses high-frequency linear probes to visualize superficial soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints) with higher resolution. Musculoskeletal scans allow dynamic movement assessment and guided injections; both are operator-dependent, but musculoskeletal exams are tailored for detailed soft-tissue and joint evaluation.

Most musculoskeletal ultrasound scans take about 15 to 30 minutes for a single joint or tendon. More complex exams or multiple sites may take up to 45 minutes. Appointments often include brief preparation and discussion, so plan for around 30 to 60 minutes total. The scan is noninvasive, usually painless, and clinicians can often give immediate results.

Usually you’ll need to expose only the area being scanned. For abdominal or pelvic scans you may remove clothing and wear a gown; pelvic ultrasound may require a full bladder or a transvaginal probe (which will need consent and a drape). For breast, neck, or limb ultrasounds you’ll simply uncover the site. Staff preserve modesty and a chaperone can be requested. Follow clinic’s prep instructions.
