Ultrasound KUB With PVR

KUB ultrasound examines the kidneys, ureters and bladder to detect stones, blockages, hydronephrosis, cysts or masses and assess urinary tract anatomy. PVR (post-void residual) ultrasound measures the volume of urine remaining in the bladder after voiding to evaluate urinary retention or incomplete emptying. Both are non-invasive, quick, painless ultrasound scans used to guide diagnosis and treatment.

PVR (post-void residual) is the volume of urine remaining in the bladder after voiding, measured by ultrasound or a bladder scan. It helps evaluate urinary retention, incontinence, BPH and neurogenic bladder. Normal PVR is generally low (often <50 mL); values >100–200 mL suggest clinically significant retention and may prompt further evaluation or catheterization. It's a quick, noninvasive bedside test.

A KUB is a plain X‑ray of the kidneys, ureters and bladder to detect stones, calcifications and gross bladder distension. When ordered “with prostate and residual volume,” it’s combined with pelvic/prostate assessment (usually ultrasound) and measurement of post‑void residual (PVR) urine. This evaluates prostate enlargement or outflow obstruction and quantifies retained urine to guide treatment for retention or recurrent infections.

Ultrasound KUB with post-void residual (PVR) is a noninvasive, radiation-free bedside test that evaluates kidneys, ureters and bladder, detects hydronephrosis, bladder wall changes and many renal/bladder abnormalities, and measures residual urine after voiding. PVR quantifies urinary retention, helps decide catheterization, monitors treatment for obstruction or neurogenic bladder, and is safe, repeatable and cost-effective.

A normal post‑void residual (PVR) is generally less than 50 mL. Values under 100 mL may be acceptable, especially in older adults; PVR above 100 mL suggests incomplete bladder emptying, and levels over 200 mL indicate significant urinary retention that often warrants evaluation. Clinical context and symptoms guide interpretation and further testing if elevated.

A KUB ultrasound is noninvasive and typically painless. You might feel light pressure as the technician moves the transducer and the cold gel can be briefly uncomfortable. If a full bladder is required, you may experience urgency or mild discomfort. Deep breaths or repositioning can cause slight discomfort for some. Tell the sonographer if you feel pain or have limited mobility.
