Ultrasound Fetal Well Being (FWB)

A FWB (fetal well‑being) ultrasound is a pregnancy scan that assesses the baby’s health and growth. It measures fetal size and estimated weight, checks amniotic fluid and placental position, evaluates fetal movements and heart activity, and may include Doppler blood‑flow studies or a biophysical profile. Done in the third trimester or if concerns arise, it helps detect problems and guide care.

Cost of an FWB (full blood workup/full blood count) varies widely by country and test panel: in India private labs ~INR 200–2,000; in the US typical lab charges range ~$10–$200 (insurance affects out‑of‑pocket); in the UK tests are usually free through public healthcare but cost £10–£50 privately. During a fetal well‑being (FWB) ultrasound expect a non‑invasive scan with gel on your abdomen (sometimes transvaginal early on). The sonographer checks fetal heartbeat, movement, growth measurements, placenta, amniotic fluid and, if needed, Doppler blood flow. You may be asked to have a full bladder and wear loose clothing. The scan usually takes 20–45 minutes; you’ll see images, get a verbal summary, and receive a written report.

FWB stands for fetal well-being. Ultrasound confirms sex by visualizing the external genitalia—penis or labia—most reliably during the mid‑pregnancy anatomy scan (about 18–22 weeks). Earlier methods (nub angle) are less reliable. Accuracy depends on fetal position, gestational age, maternal body habitus and placenta location; 3D/4D imaging can improve views. If unclear, a repeat scan or noninvasive prenatal testing can confirm.
